VMware Enterprise Systems Connector Changes with Workspace ONE UEM 1810

Overview

As of Workspace ONE UEM 1810 the VMware AirWatch Cloud Connector and VMware Identity Manager connector installers are now available separately and are no longer available as part of the VMware Enterprise Systems Connector.

This change was done to facilitate the deployment models of both products and to support the different release cycles that each product follows.

The VMware AirWatch Cloud Connector installer is still available from the Workspace ONE UEM console via the system settings menu.

The VMware Identity Manager connector installer is available via the my.vmware.com and my.workspaceone.com portals starting with Identity Manager 3.3+.

Customer Impact

Depending on how the products are installed on the customer environment there are different paths to follow to upgrade. Customers can obtain the VMware AirWatch Cloud Connector (ACC) installer from the Workspace ONE UEM console via the system settings menu and the VMware Identity Manager connector (IDM connector) from either the my.vmware.com or my.workspaceone.com portals.

The ACC and Identity Manager connector can still be installed on the same server (per sizing guidelines) if desired.

Upgrading if ACC and IDM connector are installed on different servers:

  • Upgrade IDM connector with new IDM connector installer (from resource portal) and upgrade ACC with either the ACC installer (from console) or ACC auto update.
  • ACC auto update functionality remains the same (if enabled).

Upgrading if ACC and IDM connector are on the same server and:

ACC installer executed before IDM connector installer:

  • The user must upgrade the IDM connector first (to delink the installers and preserve the IDM connector installation) and then upgrade ACC with either the ACC installer or ACC auto update
  • If the ACC installer is executed prior to the IDM connector installer the user will get hard blocked and receive the message below alerting them on what to do:
"The VMware Identity Manager connector is no longer included with the AirWatch Cloud Connector in the VMware Enterprise Systems Connector Installer.
In order to preserve the VMware Identity Manager connector instance installed on this machine you must first download and install the stand alone VMware Identity Manager connector installer.

After completing the VMware Identity Manager connector installation run this installer again to upgrade the AirWatch Cloud Connector."

IDM connector installer executed before ACC installer:

  • IDM connector installer will backup the IDM connector installation to a temporary folder, remove the IDM connector feature from the VMware Enterprise Systems Connector installation and then reinstall IDM connector using the data that was backed up thus preserving the IDM connector install.
  • ACC auto update functionality remains the same (if enabled).
