End of General Support for certain AirWatch Android OEM Service Applications

Overview

Certain AirWatch Android OEM Service applications for Android Legacy enrolled devices will reach End of General Support on September 27th, 2019.  Effective by end of 2018, the applications listed below will be removed from the Google Play Store. On September 27th, 2019, VMware Workspace ONE will no longer offer support or downloads of the applications. The following Android Service Applications are affected:

  • HTC Service
  • Kyocera Service
  • Lenovo Service
  • Panasonic Service
  • Samsung Service

End of Life Phases

A two-phased approach will be used to End of Life these applications. 

Phase 1: Removal from Google Play

  1. Update Android Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub to ignore Service Application requirement for listed OEMs
  2. Removal of service apps from Google Play Store
  3. Service apps remain on Workspace ONE Resource Portal for 12 months

Phase 2: Full End of Life (EOL) - 12 Months

  1. Additional documentation instructing customers to migrate to the new versions of the apps or use Android Enterprise
  2. Retirement of apps from Resource Portal

Customer Impact

Customers currently using these applications on Android (Legacy) managed devices should explore either of the following two options:

Option 1: Update to the latest Service Applications outlined in the following table:

Integrated into Workspace ONE Hub

Note: These applications are available on the My Workspace ONE Resource portal and can be managed as internal applications. They will not be posted to the Google Play Store. 

Option 2: Migrate devices to Android Enterprise

  • If “Push from Play Store” is enabled in Console Settings > Devices & Users > Android > Service Applications, note that in an upcoming version of Android Hub, this setting will be ignored for the above listed OEMs.
  • Customers already using the newer versions of the Service Applications will have no impact.
  • Customers using Android Enterprise will have no impact, as these apps are not supported in that mode.
  • If customers still wish to use these applications, they will still be available on the myWorkspaceONE Resource Portal until the official EOL date.
