Seeding Android Service Applications in the Workspace ONE UEM (AirWatch) Console

Overview

Android OEM Service applications have historically been seeded in the Workspace ONE UEM (AirWatch) Console, which enabled devices deployed with Android Legacy to download the latest versions of the apps during enrollment directly from the console. This was useful for devices which did not have access to Google Play Services.

In an effort to provide the best possible user-experience, VMware will no longer update or seed new versions of Android Service applications into the Workspace ONE UEM (AirWatch) Console. Admins are encouraged to have users retrieve the service applications from the Google Play Store during enrollment, or push them to devices post-enrollment as a managed application. Additionally, the application APK files are available on the My Workspace ONE Resource portal for download. 

 

Customer Impact

Admins with Android Legacy deployments are advised to use the Google Play Store or Workspace ONE App Management to install OEM Service applications on devices during or after enrollment. 

With the exception of Zebra, devices using Android Enterprise no longer require an OEM Service and are not impacted. The Zebra MX Service is available on the Google Play Store and is typically installed using barcode or side-load staging enrollment.

 

Workaround (On-Premises)

If you are in an on-premises environment, you can seed the service apps in the Workspace ONE UEM (AirWatch) Console by performing the following steps:

  1. Download the OEM Service APK file from the myWorkspaceONE Resource Portal
  2. Rename the APK file to “oem_{manufacturer}.apk” where manufacturer exactly matches the value reported by the device.
    To obtain this value, connect the device to ADB and run the following command:
    adb shell getprop | grep 'manufacturer'
  3. Upload the APK file to the console under “E:\AirWatch\Default Website\Agents\Android”
  4. Under Settings > Devices & Users > Android > Service Applications, uncheck “Push Service App from Play Store”
