When enrolling Samsung devices running Android 8.0 Oreo into Android Work Profile mode, third-party keyboards are disabled by default. This is due to an identified issue which could allow enterprise data to be captured outside of the Android Work Profile if an unauthorized keyboard is used. As a result, the user only has access to the native Samsung keyboard and is unable to select any other keyboards. In the Settings application, the keyboard settings will show as "Disabled by Admin"; this behavior is system-wide and not limited to the Android Work Profile.
End users enrolling Samsung Android 8.0 devices into Android Work Profile mode will not be able to use any keyboard except for the native Samsung keyboard.
A current workaround to enable third-party keyboards on Samsung Android 8.0 devices is to create an Android Custom Settings Restrictions profile and add the following XML to the Custom Settings field:
<characteristic type="com.airwatch.android.androidwork.restrictions" uuid="854ff38f-1fed-443d-a3aa-356fe9aa8770"><parm name="restrictKeyboardOrInputPackages" value="False" /></characteristic>
Additional information on enabling users to select a third-party keyboard can be found here.
As part of a future update, Samsung will allow users to change the keyboard based on the policies configured by the IT admin. Admins can choose to disable third party keyboards using an Android Restrictions profile in the Workspace ONE UEM Console.
