iOS 11.3 devices causing VPP applications to be removed

Alert: Action required for customers installing VPP applications on iOS 11.3 devices

Last Updated on 5-Apr-18 at 10:54 am.

With the release of iOS 11.3, a new issue has been discovered affecting customers installing VPP applications on iOS 11.3 devices. Please review the information below to determine if you are impacted by this issue and how to resolve it.

Symptoms

With devices running iOS 11.3, VPP apps that are being installed using an Install Application command from MDM are returning an incorrect bundle ID back to AirWatch. AirWatch stores this incorrect bundle ID and upon sync or any scenario where we would check a device’s app list sample, triggers a removal command for apps with incorrect bundle IDs. This will affect devices running any iOS version (not only iOS 11.3).

This issue only surfaces on new installs of VPP apps of iOS 11.3 devices. iOS 11.3 devices that have existing apps installed should not see this error.

Steps Taken

Issues Identified SaaS On-Premise

Apps being installed on iOS 11.3 devices can return incorrect bundle ID resulting in removal of app from devices.

RESOLVED: All SaaS environments have successfully been patched.

RESOLVED: AirWatch has published a script to patch environments. AirWatch recommends downloading and running this patch immediately on your environment to prevent any further impact of the incorrect bundleIDs being stored.

Patched environments could still have stale, incorrect app data in the database affected prior to the patch.

RESOLVED: All SaaS environments have successfully been patched.

RESOLVED: A tool has been created for on premise customers to repair incorrect VPP records and can be accessed here. Please ensure the patch above has been applied before executing this tool. If devices had any applications removed due to bad data the applications will re-push after the next device sync once the VPP records are repaired. A device sync can be manually triggered by re-saving the associated application smart group or manually select sync on the device details page.

Custom B2B VPP apps being installed on iOS 11.3 devices can return incorrect bundle ID resulting in removal of app from devices.

Patched environments could still have stale, incorrect custom B2B app data in the database affected prior to the patch.

RESOLVED: AirWatch recommends you double check your custom B2B app bundle IDs in the AirWatch Console. You can resolve these manually as seen in the image below.

Note:

  • Please ensure your database is backed up prior to performing any of these steps.
  • Any upgrade installed will overwrite the patch. The patch will need to be run again once the upgrade is complete.
  • This patch has only been validated on AirWatch versions 9.0+ but can be executed on previous, unsupported versions.
  • If you are on Console 9.2.3.17+ or 9.3.0.9+, this custom patch is already included.
