End of General Support for the Play Store Integration Service

VMware AirWatch is announcing End of General Support for the Play Store Integration Service on December 15th, 2018. Existing customers who utilize the Play Store Integration Service to search and add public Android apps to the AirWatch console are encouraged to set up Android for Work to use the official Play Store search experience.

Why is AirWatch announcing End of General Support for the Play Store Integration Service?

With Android for Work, Google introduced the ability to search the Play Store through an iframe. Subsequently, AirWatch added support to search through the iframe in AirWatch Console 9.1.0. This provides the best, most reliable experience to add public Android apps to the AirWatch console; therefore, we are encouraging customers to use this search method in place of the Play Store Integration Service.

What is Android for Work, and how do I set it up?

Android for Work is a set of APIs built into the Android operating system that enables EMMs to apply policies and manage devices. Setting up Android for Work in the AirWatch Console is required in order to use the iframe Play Store search experience. Detailed steps to set up Android for Work are provided in the Android for Work Guide. For customers that are not using G-Suite, the setup should only take a couple of minutes.

I don’t want to change how our devices are managed, so I don’t want my devices using Android for Work. How can I still utilize the new Play Store search experience?

On AirWatch 9.2+ and subsequent versions, organizations can set up Android for Work yet choose to continue enrolling their devices using Device Administrator. To do so, after setting up Android for Work in the AirWatch Console, open the “Enrollment Restrictions” tab in the Android for Work settings page and choose “Do not use Android for Work”. This allows the use of the iframe Play Store search experience while retaining existing device management workflows.

Are there additional networking requirements for the iframe Play Store search experience?

Yes. Since the iframe used to search the Play Store runs on the browser the admin is using to access the AirWatch Console, the admin’s laptop/desktop must be able to reach the Managed Play Store (https://play.google.com/work).

Implications for Customers:

  • AirWatch Console 9.1.0+: Customers must set up Android for Work in order to use the Play Store search experience. Detailed steps to set up Android for Work are provided in the Android for Work Guide.
  • AirWatch Console lower than 9.1.0: The iframe Play Store search experience is not supported; therefore, there are no implications for customers using these versions of AirWatch.
