End of Support Life for Legacy Chrome OS Management

On August 22, 2017, VMware announced a collaboration with Google to integrate with Chrome Device Management APIs to enable AirWatch to be the first UEM solution to manage Chrome OS devices. These APIs include a comprehensive set of policies for managing Chrome OS devices that were not possible previously.

Prior to this release, customers utilized an AirWatch Agent extension to enable Chrome OS management. These management capabilities were limited to setting policies for the Chrome browser only, such as adding bookmarks and blacklisting/whitelisting URLs. To provide customers with the most robust feature set and the best possible experience, customers are encouraged to migrate to the new Chrome OS management platform that has been released in AirWatch Console 9.2.0. Please reference the migration resources below for more information.

Customers using the legacy Chrome OS management platform (via the AirWatch Agent extension) will only be able to do so until November 3, 2018, when the product will reach its End of Support Life. All customers should migrate to the new Chrome OS management platform that has been released in AirWatch Console 9.2.0 by this time to ensure their Chrome OS management capabilities are not interrupted.

Implications for Customers:

AirWatch Console v9.2.0 (or higher): New Chrome OS management features are available starting with AirWatch 9.2.0 including:

  • Ability to disable guest mode and restrict sign-in to the organization’s domain.
  • Enable kiosk and digital signage use cases.
  • Configure Single Sign On policies.
  • Push Chrome and Android Apps.

Chrome OS Enterprise Licenses: Customers will need to purchase a Chrome Enterprise license from Google to utilize the new Chrome OS management. These can be purchased from a partner (more information available in the link under Migration Resources). Additional licenses from AirWatch are not required.
