Getting ready for iOS 10.3

Alert: Action required for customers using AirWatch applications, SDK or App Wrapping

If you are managing iOS devices through AirWatch and leverage AirWatch applications, SDK, or App Wrapping, it is critical that you make updates to prepare for iOS 10.3.  If you do not make updates you risk devices being incorrectly flagged as compromised and unintentionally wiped or unenrolled when they upgrade to iOS 10.3.  Additionally, if you have configured Mobile Email Management in your environment, compromised devices may stop receiving email.  If a device updates to iOS 10.3 before updating all affected applications and is marked as compromised, then that device must update all affected applications and send a beacon back to the console in order to revert the status back to uncompromised.  A beacon can be manually sent to the console by opening any application that contains the AirWatch SDK.

This behavior is due to the fact that, in iOS 10.3, Apple has updated the file system to Apple File System (APFS).  This file system change causes conflicts with the existing AirWatch compromise detection system.  In order to fully support compromised detection on Apple File System, and iOS 10.3 in general, AirWatch will be releasing updated versions all applications, the App Wrapping engine, and the AirWatch SDK.

If you are unable to make these updates in advance of iOS 10.3 we recommend that you temporarily disable Compromised Protection and any compliance policies related to Compromised Detection.

AirWatch SDK 5.9.3.3 support for iOS 10.3

If you are currently leveraging an application that was developed utilizing the AirWatch SDK, you must update this application to utilize AirWatch SDK 5.9.3.3 for iOS.

Any iOS applications that leverage the AirWatch SDK must be rebuilt using SDK 5.9.3.3.  Once these applications have been updated, the updated versions should be deployed to devices to ensure that they are fully supported once they upgrade to iOS 10.3.

AirWatch iOS App Wrapping 5.3.1 support for iOS 10.3

Any application that has been deployed through AirWatch using the App Wrapping service must be rewrapped using AirWatch App Wrapping Engine 5.3.1.

Any iOS applications that have been deployed leveraging earlier versions of the App Wrapping Engine must be re-wrapped using the latest engine.  Once these applications have been updated and re-wrapped, the updated versions should be deployed to devices to ensure that they are fully supported as they upgrade to iOS 10.3.

Take the following steps to rewrap applications.

  • Build a new version of the app so that it has a version number that is greater than the currently deployed version in AirWatch.
  • Upload the rebuilt app to AirWatch in Apps & Books > Applications > List View > Internal.
  • Use the App Wrapping tab to rewrap the application.

For more information about App Wrapping, refer to the VMware AirWatch App Wrapping Guide.

Many AirWatch apps now support iOS 10,3, including the AirWatch Agent, Container, Browser, Content Locker, and VMware Boxer. Additionally, AirWatch SDK 5.9.3.3 fully supports iOS 10.3.  We are still working to provide iOS 10.3 support for Workspace ONE, as well as AirWatch Inbox and Video, as soon as possible.

Please make sure to follow the instructions outlined in the Getting Ready for iOS 10.3 article to ensure that your end users are fully supported when iOS 10.3 is formally released by Apple.
